Holiday Splendor: Tree #10

Whimsical Splendor, Inspired by the Joy of Playing Dress-up
Cranbrook Center for Collections and Research: Kevin Adkisson & Leslie Mio

All children enjoy playing “dress-up” – whether in a costume or in the clothes of a family member. For George and Ellen Booth’s family, especially their youngest children, Florence and Henry, any occasion was an excuse to dress-up – a family picnic, a visit from family or friends, the arrival of a new boat for the lake.

In this room, we imagine the Booth grandchildren, visiting for the Holidays, playing dress-up with their grandmother’s clothing and some costumes from the Cranbrook Masque. Perhaps they will be putting on a play, as they did for their grandparents' anniversary in 1937.

Founded in 2012, Cranbrook Center for Collections and Research centralizes the Cranbrook story to increase awareness of - and access to - the diverse art, architectural, landscape, design, and historical resources that comprise the Cranbrook legacy. The Center - which includes Cranbrook Archives - serves a broad audience through its research initiatives and educational programs that include tours, lectures, and numerous behind-the-scenes opportunities.
