Holiday Splendor: Tree #7

The Mitten Tree
Mittens for Detroit & Broner Hat and Glove

Mittens for Detroit is a nonprofit that collects, purchases, and distributes new mittens and gloves to children and adults in need in Detroit and other underserved cities. Over 168,000 pairs have been distributed since its founding in 2010. Please consider donating a pair of new, unused mittens or gloves at our Cranbrook House collection box.

This tree is inspired by the children’s book "The Mitten Tree", by Candace Christiansen. The story is about a woman who secretly knits new mittens for children without them, and in return someone secretly leaves baskets of yarn on her porch. It is a story that celebrates people taking care of their neighbors and community giving.

International Mitten Tree Day is celebrated on December 6 every year.
